Street Fighter Movie 2026 Is Going to Be Insane!
A new Street Fighter movie is coming in 2026. We analyze how casting wrestling actors like Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns could shape this video game adaptation.
The upcoming Street Fighter movie faces the challenge of balancing arcade mechanics with narrative depth. By relying on performers from the wrestling world, the production is making a specific statement about the physical intensity required for these iconic characters. This is a common hurdle for fighting game adaptations, which often struggle to balance the spectacle of the arcade cabinet with meaningful storytelling.
Reflecting on the legacy of Street Fighter 2, it is clear why this franchise holds such a strong place in childhood memories. We analyze whether this release can honor the history of the series or if it will face the same challenges as previous attempts at bringing games to theaters.Subscribe for weekly character breakdowns, and let us know in the comments if you think wrestlers are the right fit for this project.

Street Fighter Movie News
SPEAKER_00Brash, there is a new Street Fighter movie coming out. It's dropping later this year, 2026, in October. It features some of our favorite wrestling/slash turned actors. Game of our childhood. Played a lot of Street Fighter 2, my friend, played a lot of Street Fighter 2. It's probably how me and my brothers actually settled a lot of disputes.
SPEAKER_01I'm probably gonna get a little hate for this, but I was more of a Tekken guy.
SPEAKER_00See, I feel like the real people went with Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. Tekken was just for nerds, man. What? Way back in the day.
Why We Love Trailer Reactions
SPEAKER_00Hello everybody, welcome to the Fandom Portals podcast. The podcast that proves that your favorite pop culture movies have something to teach you. I'm Aaron, a teacher and a film fan. This is Brad. How you gone, Brad? Good, good. Happy We're gonna watch the Street Fire trail and then we're gonna react. I've seen it before. You have not, but you can't do it.
SPEAKER_01No, I've seen I've seen bits and pieces like from like scrolling through Instagram and stuff like that. But I don't know, I don't know what it is. I've never seen to actually watch trailers. I suppose I mean for me to actually watch trailers, I have to go on YouTube and then look up the trailer and then watch it.
SPEAKER_00Or get a text message from me that says, Hey, let's talk about this trailer.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yep, that's it.
PG-13 Fights And Game Callbacks
SPEAKER_00That's the one. Alright, here's the first one. Let's watch it now. Despite all that violence, it's only rated PG 13, which is surprising to me.
SPEAKER_01That is super surprising.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, really surprising. So it's obviously choreographed violence as well. I actually feel like the the plot of this movie is going to be a secondary device to facilitate all the fights. Uh, and I'm all here for it, to be honest, it looks like.
SPEAKER_01Well, I was gonna say it's probably gonna end up being some sort of like uh Scott Pilgrim vs versus the world sort of fighting situation, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and and we saw lots of video game sort of references in there, not only the soundtrack that we heard through there, but also some of the finishing moves. We had the spinning suplex, we had uh Balrog being the dirty fighter, you can see him actually punching somebody in the nuts, played by 50 Cent as well. You have the Shadukin from obviously Ryu and Ken. Are you? Yeah, you even had E Honda's like 100 Heart Hands of Death in his bathhouse there, the the sumo wrestler, which is actually one that my brother Derek spammed all the time to get us through the Street Fighter campaign. You just sit in one spot, spam that move, e Honda wins every time. It's great. But what the one that I actually made me smile the most was seeing the the bonus level scenes where you you know in the Street Fighter games how you used to smash the car up and Ken's there smashing the car.
SPEAKER_01That's it, yeah, yeah. That's also it too. I'm like, oh, so like they actually brought the caru, like him just beating up a car.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I think Street Fighter works best when there's obviously a variety of fighters and they all have a different style. That's how the game works. So if you're going to bring a video game adaption, which has been wildly popular at the at the minute, too, with the Super Mario Bros going off and then Sonic movies going off as well, and even Mortal Kombat as we were discussing earlier. If you're gonna bring that in, you really need to pull in what people love from the games. And I feel like having over 17 characters from the posters that we've seen previously in this movie is is the way to go about it. And I don't think anybody's gonna be walking into this taking it any kind of seriously.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I think that's I think that's how it probably it ends up gonna get its PG rating, is the fact that they're gonna make it very much like the game itself. Like they're not gonna have any sort of too serious moments in it, they're not gonna have like all the blood like in the original games when you hit someone and it's like a flash of like red and orange like light.
SPEAKER_00It's not or even the 94 movies with Jean-Claude Van Damme, there was a bit of blood in that one, but yeah, also terrible, terrible movie.
SPEAKER_01But um, yeah, I reckon they're gonna they're gonna make it very well as much as they can cartoonish. But uh from some of the scenes I saw there, like that seem like Chun Lee in our underwear walking up and throwing uh numtrucks into the the poster of Empire, yeah. Yeah, I'm like, oh okay.
SPEAKER_00Little risque.
Lore Deep Dive And Villain Theories
SPEAKER_00Um, one thing I also noticed yeah, one thing I also noticed through that trailer is they're really banging on about you know Ken and Ryu being brothers, and what's always that way though. It's always that way, but whether they're actually brothers or whether it's more like a street fighter brethren, I'm not too sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so Ryu's Ryu's teacher had to do a I think was doing a favour for Ken's parents or Ken's family, and took him in and trained Ryu and Ken together, and that's how they became brothers, and then this seems to be the sort of fallout afterwards in the future when they've had a fallout.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, what we saw this one was in 1993, and it said world tournament and the number two underneath it. So we know that there was a tournament before this. The tournament's held by M. Bison, and I do believe I'm not sure if it said explicitly in the trailer, but I guarantee that Ryu won the first world tournament, and he's obviously considered a world champion, and that's why Chun Lee comes to recruit him for the next one for whatever reason occurs.
SPEAKER_01But bison, I'm guessing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, bison shadow work.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because I was gonna say bison, I'm assuming, will be like the main antagonists. Yeah, and I'll put that in quotes because but they've also got Blanker in there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, and bison.
SPEAKER_01I think we'll see it will end up being like the the the main main antagonist of the club.
SPEAKER_00The main attraction, yeah. He he is he was kept a secret until the most recent trailer, the one that we just watched. Previous to that, he hadn't been shown on screen, and I'm not sure if that's because they're afraid of backlash or whether they were saving something for it, but Jason Momoa is a massive pull for audiences to come and watch this one. But yeah, M. Bison runs the world tournament, but in Street Fighter lore, yeah, that's right, everybody, Street Fighter has lore. Um, he's also the one that sort of runs the Shadowloo, which is an international, let's say, crime syndicate. And he's also responsible for developing the Shadow Lou dolls, which is who Cammy's a part of, that girl that you saw with the pink, oh not the pink, sorry, the blonde plat and the blue army get up. Yeah, she's usually in green and a red beret, but she seems like she's playing on the villain side in this one, but later on in the lore, she does turn in to be a British agent of MI6, so maybe there's like some double agency going on in that one that we'll see revealed later. But yeah, I it starts off, obviously, as Ken and Ryu being enemies, and I feel like this is an enemies to lover plot, not so much lover, but yeah, allies.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, working have things work together begrudgingly, yeah, um, and then finding the groove again and ending up forging that brotherhood.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, I think Chun Lee's the one that's going to go around because we saw that scene at the start. She's going to recruit Ryu out of retirement. And I honestly think he's he's tapped into this sort of power that's that's kind of dangerous, and he may have injured somebody or hurt somebody or is unable to control this power, and that's why he doesn't fight anymore. Because I know him and Akuma suffer, I'll put in quote marks, from the same power called the Surge of Murderous Intent. It has a Japanese name as well, but basically the same power that runs through Akuma runs through Ryu. And Akuma obviously embraces the violent side of that, and that's why we see Ryu being very stoic and meditative and very patient with his fighting style and very particular. And then juxtaposed to that, you see Ken, who's very arrogant and also very cocky, and I feel like that's gonna come to a head where Ryu has something to teach Ken, but Ken might also have something to teach Ryu in terms of loosening up.
SPEAKER_01I just want to backtrack on something I said too. I said that Blanker's gonna be the main bad guy. My apologies. It's gonna be um Akuma who's gonna be the main bad guy.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Big bad guy. I think Blanca's actually only gonna bid in it for that prison fight that we saw on screen, and he won't be in it anymore after that.
SPEAKER_00Well, the special effects might render him out of it because yeah, he's a he's an electric sort of character, but that might be one of Roman Reigns' biggest roles, then, if he is the the big ultimate villain of the whole thing.
SPEAKER_01But that's the thing. I I think the whole throughout the whole movie, it's gonna be, as you said, I reckon it's gonna be Chun Lee and her group of I reckon she's she goes around and finds people to be on her side, and then there's gonna be then there's gonna be Bison, and then his group of people that he's sort of gonna have who are more loyal to him, yeah, uh, fighting it fighting it out who are more um suited to power, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like Zangief will be one of them, he's the Russian wrestler. He was always who I played as well, because we talked about my brother Derek spamming I Honda's 100 hands. I used to spam his clothesline all the time, so it was a clotheslining Russian wrestler and a sumo wrestler doing a hundred hands on our Sega consoles every day, and whoever got in first won.
SPEAKER_01But but yeah, that's all I reckon, like yeah, it'll be a big role, but I reckon I reckon it's gonna be small. I don't reckon he'll be there until the end. I reckon that or he's gonna be at the start and gonna be at the end, yeah. And he could also be the antithesis of why Ryon can friends anymore.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I actually kind of believe that too, because that darker power we talked about before the Surge of Murderous Intent, I feel like M. Bison might be trying to get his hands on that to be more powerful and obviously take more control because I I have this feeling that the tournament is going to serve as a distraction. Like M. Bison is gonna run that second tournament as a distraction to gather all the fighters in one place so he can do his nefarious plot elsewhere with nobody to stop him. You know, that mustache twirling 90s villain sort of plot intention that I think he's gonna go down. But yeah, we'll have to wait and see with that one.
SPEAKER_01Yes, no, but it does
Casting Picks And Wrestler Crossovers
SPEAKER_01it it does look good. The fighting looks pretty the fighting looks really good, like the choreography looks really good. Uh it's it's nice to see I'm I'm a fairly big wrestling fan. Yeah, it's nice to see Cody and Roman Reigns in there, but like they're not all they're on my top 20 list of my favourite personal wrestlers, but I wouldn't say they're my they're they're probably not in my top five or top maybe not in my top ten, but no, they're very good wrestlers, and it's uh I could see well what previously in Zootopia 2 we had uh CM Punk and Roman Reigns as the Z Bros, and then they're getting around, aren't they?
SPEAKER_00John Cena and The Rock have opened doors for that kind of transition.
SPEAKER_01Cody Rhodes was in um the re remake of the Naked Gun. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Liam Neeson, he was the bartender, yeah, yeah. And then um yeah, Roman Reigns has been in He's been in Fast and the Furious as well.
SPEAKER_00I think he was in Hobbs and Shaw. Was Roman Reigns in that? Oh, he was yeah, he was in Hobbs and Shaw when they went back to um Samoa, I believe, or one of the Pacific Islands. Hobbes' cousin, yeah. Hobbs's yeah, the rock.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we'll do it on the rock plate. I actually haven't seen Hobbs and Shaw. I stopped watching The Fast and Furious after like the third one. The fourth one or the fourth one. I've I've watched them all, but yeah, they get they started getting a bit too ridiculous for me, like jumping off cliffs and hanging onto helicopters and flying into space, and yeah, I'm just like, oh yeah, whatever. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I've got a couple of uh other stars in this one too. Obviously, we've got Noah Centinho playing Ken, uh Andrew Koji playing Ryu, who is famous for being in bullet train, he played Kimura, and then we've got David Dasmalchin who plays M. Bison, he was polka dot man in the Suicide Squad. To me, he doesn't look menacing enough or strong enough or large enough to be the villain of mass destruction here. He gives me Doctor Evil vibes, and I think it's gonna fit with the vibe of the film, but I'd like my villain to be a little bit more villainous if I'm honest. That's my name.
SPEAKER_01When when I heard like I like David's an amazing actor, yeah, and I reckon he could pull off, I he could probably definitely pull off evil and menacing, but I yeah, I honestly I don't think he has the build to pull off bison.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like bison must be a big tough general, and absolutely, and he like he literally stomps on people's head with perfect posture and rides a horse into battle. And you know, you could probably see in the background those pictures of him, or like paintings of him in his office looking more grandiose and large than he actually is, so maybe that's part of his character, the fact that he's compensating for a lot of it. But he seems like a little man who who's looking for a lot of power.
SPEAKER_01I'm definitely not gonna boycott it because of it. Like absolutely not, no. I like and that's the thing, I I never boycott anything for who they cast.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, I think that in terms of this, it's just gonna be a fun romp at the cinemas. From the trailer, we saw lots of different locations, so we know that a fight occurs in lots of different locations, and there's a larger than life plot that's going to underpin the the tournament as a whole. So I'll definitely be going to see it. Yes, based on the trailer, job well done.
SPEAKER_01So yes, no, it looks fantastic. I I just hope they do something with Tekken similar.
SPEAKER_00Tekken's for nerds, and on that note, we will end this one there,
