When Stu Macher says “Movies don’t create psychos. Movies make psychos more creative,” the film does something radical. It breaks the rules of horror while explaining them.
Scream (1996) didn’t just revive the slasher genre. It turned the camera back on the audience. By using meta references, horror trivia, and self aware characters, the film exposed the formulas that had defined the genre for years and then played with them in real time.
It’s one of the reasons Scream still feels fresh today and why the franchise continues to influence modern horror.
